Special Announcement:
New Year's Metta Practice in Vail - Karen Anderson is leading a metta meditation practice at the Vitality Center at Vail Mountain Lodge (VAC) December 30th from 6 to 7.
More information is here.
Meditation Vail offers weekly classes in Buddhist philosophy and meditation with emphasis on practice, as taught by the Buddha, to enable individuals to understand the causes of their emotions and reactions, and free themselves from the effects of suffering and dissatisfaction in their daily lives.
All are welcome, and no prior meditation experience is necessary. Weekend retreats are conducted monthly, and personal coaching or guidance is available by appointment for those who are interested. We are non-profit, and do our best to make these opportunities available at the lowest cost possible.
Our teachers are practitioners with many years of study and practice, including many long retreats. Being Westerners, they understand the stresses and cultural conditions that impact daily life and know how to prevent these factors from interfering with meditation practice. In addition, they have a down-to-earth, open approach to sharing what they know, free of the ritual and formality that sometimes can hamper more formal relationships with teachers.
The weekly classes are focused on the central teachings of the Buddha, the cultivation of mindfulness of body, vedana, and mind and explore the ways in which this mindfulness enables us to understand and free ourselves from the dissatisfactions and frustrations of daily living. Both calming (shamatha) and special insight (vipassana) techniques are used to give a complete, balanced practice leading to greater understanding and inner harmony and peace. Practices that remove obstacles to joy, loving kindness, compassion and equanimity are also taught, to supplement and round out the “toolbox” of meditation skills.
A guided meditation is included in each class, as a learning tool to give confidence in one’s ability to practice the technique. This is followed by a talk, discussion, and question and answer period. Although there is often a series of classes on one topic, each class is designed to be a stand-alone experience that doesn’t depend on participation in prior classes in order to be understood. The teaching is designed to be clear, direct and understandable and does not rely on special terminology or prior background in Buddhism or any other subject.
